About Popeyes
Popeyes is a multinational American fast-food restaurant chain. It was founded in 1972, and its first restaurant was located in New Orleans, Louisiana. This is why the company decided to name itself Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Inc. The name “Popeyes” was taken from Jimmy ‘Popeyes’ Doyle, a character in the movie French Connection.
Born in Louisiana, Popeyes was opened a year after French Connection was released. The name is considered interesting as Louisiana is indeed a village of people descended from former French exiles. This fast-food restaurant is famous for its Cajun menu, which features spicy food. The Cajun-style spicy taste is what Popeyes offers through its menu, which includes fried chicken, nuggets, seafood, biscuits, and more.
Popeyes has many outlets across the United States, including in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Washington DC, Texas, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and many more. In addition to fried chicken, nuggets, and burgers, Popeyes also serves drinks and desserts, such as mango lemonade, strawberry lemonade, ginger ale, Hawaiian punch, and cinnamon apple pie. They also serve kids’ meals.
The History of Popeyes
The founder of Popeyes was Alvin C. Copeland Sr. He opened a restaurant named Chicken on the Run in the New Orleans suburb of Arabi, which served traditional Southern-style fried chicken. After several months of poor performance, he decided to reopen the restaurant under the name of Popeyes. This time he sold spicy, New Orleans-style fried chicken.
In 1976, Popeyes opened its first franchise restaurant in Louisiana. In 1983, the restaurant introduced buttermilk biscuits, which later became a significant menu item. A year later, Popeyes expanded to Toronto, Canada. In 1985, Popeyes opened its 500th restaurant in Landover, Maryland, which put the restaurant in an equal position with national competitors.
Based on the number of units, Popeyes became the third-largest quick-service chicken chain. In 2011, it managed to open its 2,000th restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. That same year, the restaurant introduced many new menu items, such as blackened tenders, rip’n chick’n, and dip’n chick’n.
