The History of Nike

Nike was previously named Blue Ribbon Sports. It was founded by a track athlete, Philip Knight, and his trainer, Bill Bowerman from the University of Oregon in January 1964.

This company initially operated as a distributor for a Japanese shoemaker, Onitsuka Tiger.

At that time, they began to import running shoes from Japan to compete with German brands, such as Puma and Adidas that already dominated the US markets at that time.

They chose Japanese shoes as they were more affordable. Knight started to sell the shoes in athletic stadiums, where sales slowly but surely dramatically increased. In the 1970s, Knight and his developing company saw the beginning of the jogging revolution so he began to sell his products to non-professional runners as well.

Then he started to immediately open a wider market and changed the image of running shoes to fashion shoes that managed to attract customers of all ages. The company’s profit rapidly grew.

In 1966, Blue Ribbon Sports opened its first retail store on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica, California. In 1971, the relationship between Blue Ribbon Sports and Onitsuka Tiger came to an end.

Blue Ribbon Sports was ready to start its own footwear company. Its first shoes sold were football shoes named Nike, released back in the summer of 1971. Then in February 1972, Blue Ribbon Sports introduced Nike as its brand. In Greece’s myth, Nike was a goddess associated with victory and success.

In 1978, Blue Ribbon Sports officially changed its name to Nike, Inc. It easily became so popular with its ‘check’ logo and a slogan saying, ‘just do it’. Ilie Nastase was Nike’s first professional athlete who signed a contract with the brand. It continues to sponsor athletes as its main marketing strategy.

Back in 1979, Nike was the most popular running shoe brand in states of the US. Now, they sell other items rather than just running shoes. They also sell sports clothes and equipment. Nike has dominated half the market in the United States with a revenue of $149 million.
